Why are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?

Fresher, Cleaner Smile

Even if you stick to a strict hygiene schedule every day, you’re bound to miss some tiny bit of plaque on your teeth at some point. Unfortunately, within a few hours, this plaque hardens and becomes significantly more difficult to remove. Having your teeth professionally cleaned so regularly allows you to enjoy that smooth, clean feeling in your mouth.

Financially Smarter

For every dollar you spend on preventing oral health issues, you save anywhere between $8 and $50 on repairs and treatment. In other words, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The little you invest in stopping dental problems in advance pales in comparison to what you would spend to correct cavities, replace missing teeth, and more. Even if you have dental insurance, you stand to save the most by avoiding trouble in the first place.

Less Pain and Inconvenience

No one wants to take time off work or school to go to the dentist’s office for lengthy treatment with their busy schedule, and if you’ve ever experienced a severe toothache, you know avoiding that discomfort at all costs is well worthwhile! In addition, avoiding issues like gum disease can help you hold onto your teeth for as long as possible and reduce your risk for several systemic diseases, like cardiovascular disease, dementia, kidney disease, and even certain kinds of cancer.

More Peace of Mind

When you leave our office after a dental checkup and cleaning, you can feel confident that your mouth is healthy and strong. Although this doesn’t give you permission to abuse your teeth and gums, this reassurance can help you feel more comfortable about your smile, especially while traveling to an unfamiliar place. At least your oral health doesn’t have to be a huge worry!

What to Expect During a Dental Checkup

The primary role our dentists play in this routine appointment is to inspect your mouth and diagnose any existing problems you may not be aware of. For instance, in your X-rays, they may find a small cavity, which can usually be addressed with a filling. Without this early detection, the cavity would only keep getting larger and deeper, eventually giving you pain and requiring more invasive procedures like a root canal and dental crown or even extraction. This exam takes just a couple of minutes, is completely pain free, gives you and your dentist a chance to get to know each other, provides time to review your dentist’s findings and recommendations, and presents an opportunity when to ask any smile-related questions.

What to Expect During a Dental Cleaning

While a checkup catches present issues, a regular dental cleaning stops future ones from happening. One of our hygienists will work gently to remove deposits of hardened plaque on your teeth, particularly where it can be hard to reach with a toothbrush and floss. Using special instruments, we can safely and comfortably chip off these deposits, cutting off bacteria from your teeth and gums. After this, we will take a soft-bristled polishing tool and remove surface stains from the enamel, whitening your teeth by a couple of shades. Your hygienist might also go through the spaces between your teeth with normal floss, demonstrating proper technique and addressing any concerns you may have about your at-home daily oral hygiene routine.
